History

The school was originally chartered by the State of Texas as Incarnate Word Academy in 1881. In 1897 it purchased 283 acres (1.15 km2) from George W. Brackenridge. It awarded diplomas to first two high school graduates in 1903 In 1922 it opened the first five-story school building for students, first grade through college. In 1970 it changed to incorporate modular scheduling and built its science facility. It became part of the "Brainpower Connection" with Incarnate Word College (now the University of the Incarnate Word) in 1989.

Modular Schedule

Classess runs on a modular schedule. Each day is broken down into 17 time-periods called "mods." Mods are 20 minutes long, except the lunch mods, which are 23 minutes. The schedule is on a two-week cycle. There are no bells between mods, and students are responsible for arriving to classes on time. Students and faculty also have mods without classes, called open labs, which are to be used as "study" periods. This schedule encourages personal responsibility, and aids in preparation for a college schedule.[3]

Brainpower Connection

The schools in the Brainpower Connection are University of the Incarnate Word; St. Anthony Catholic High School; Incarnate Word High School, for young women; St. Anthony Elementary School, and its developmental pre-school, the Katherine Ryan Program; and St. Peter Prince of Apostles Elementary School. The two high schools of the Brainpower Connection are under the management of University of the Incarnate Word.[4]
